The Story Behind Zumba
Zumba® was created by celebrity fitness trainer, "Beto" Perez, when in the mid 1990s he stumbled upon the concept of Latin dance inspired fitness in his native country of Colombia in South America.
With a background in as both a professional Latin Dance instructor and certified personal trainer and group exercise instructor, Beto's creative genius and happy accident combined to bring about the birth of Zumba®.
One day, upon arriving at one of his aerobics classes, Beto realized that he had forgotten his traditional fitness music at home. Improvising, he unpacked some of his favorite Latin dance music tapes from his backpack - including traditional Latin Salsa and Merengue music that he loved and with which he had been raised - popped them into the sound system, and taught his first Zumba® class on the spot! The class soon became the most popular class at his fitness facility.
In 2000 Beto made the big move the the United States, where he was approached by entrepreneurs Alberto Perlan and Alberto Aghion to create a global company based on Beto's Zumba® fitness philosophy.
Zumba® was created because of Beto's love for Latin music, exotic dance rhythms and fitness. He wanted group fitness classes to be fun, with party-like, "no-thinking" elements - to make it appealing to everyone, not just fit and coordinated participants. He wanted people of all fitness levels to be able to participate in a Zumba® class.
Join us as Zumba's fitness party expands all over the world into fitness clubs, community centres, schools, living rooms, YMCA's and any other room where you can pump up the volume, dance like nobody's watching, and experience the joy that is Zumba®.
