Zumba® is a fun and effective cardio workout and is based on the principles of interval training (alternating between fast and slower rhythms) and resistance training. These methods are known to be effective in improving your cardiovascular system, plus toning and sculpting your body.
Zumba® combines fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body in an aerobic/fitness fashion to achieve a unique blended balance of cardio and muscle-toning behefits.
Each class integrates some of the basic principles of aerobic, interval, and resistance training to maximize caloric output, cardiovascular benefits, and total body training. The cardio-based dance moves are easy-to-follow steps that include body sculpting, which targets areas such as the glutes (aka toosh!) legs, arms, abdominals, core and back, and the most important muscle in the body, the heart.
No, you don't need to sign up for classes in advance: each class is on a first come first serve basis. Be on time or even a few minutes early to sign in and get a good space.

We developed our Punch Card Program with you in mind. Simply purchase a 10 or 20-class punch card from your Zumba® Halifax Instructor or by visiting the Punch Card Program section and use your card at any of our punch card-eligible classes scheduled.
Just bring the card to the class and your Zumba® Halifax instructor will cancel a class from the card for each person using the card for that day. Each person? That's right! Our punch cards are transferable so you can share Zumba® with a friend or family member and enjoy the fitness fun together.

Yes! There are a limited number of online sign-ups for each class. For example, Wednesday night classes at the North Woodside Community Centre's Classroom 1 has a maximum of 35 participants. Up to 28 people can sign up online; that means that even if 28 people sign up online, 7 spaces are still available on a first-come basis at the studio. On Sundays at the North Woodside Community Centre Gym and Tuesdays at DANSpace, the capacity is 75 people, so 60 spaces can be reserved online, and 15 spaces are still available on a first-come basis at the studio.
No, pre-registration online is not required. I have opened the reservation system so that people can ensure their space in classes that tend to fill up. If you sign up online and show up at least 5 minutes prior to the start of class you are guaranteed a space in the class.
Remember, there are always spaces dedicated to studio drop-ins. If the class is full, reserved spots that do not show will be given to standby students 5 minutes prior to class start time.
We recommend that you wear comfortable workout clothes, and a pair of indoor athletic shoes or dance sneakers. Be sure to bring plenty of water to drink and it helps if you bring a towel - you're going to sweat!
Yes, absolutely! Zumba is for everyone of all age and fitness levels! This is a fitness class designed to make you groove, shake it, and most importantly, have fun! Zumba choreography is kept simple so you can get an incredible workout and have a fantastic time doing it, so it's "exercise in disguise"! And the more you do Zumba classes, the more familiar you will become with the steps Always remember, every Zumba is YOURS, so if you can't get a move, just smile, shake it, and do your own thing.
Always move at a pace that is comfortable for you, and remember to listen to your body: rest when you need to, bring the intensity level down if need be, and ALWAYS take a water break when you need to hydrate.
The best shoes to wear are: court shoes or “aerobic” shoes – wear shoes that do not have a lot of tread at the bottom and are meant for medial/lateral/twisting motion. Running shoes and cross training shoes are not ideal because of the tread and also they are meant more for forward motion. Jazz sneakers are fine too. Any old shoe where the bottom is worn out is good so that you can twist and move easily.
You can burn up to between 600 and 1000 calories per hour doing Zumba*, so with regular practice and healthy nutrition participants find their bodies becoming significantly slimmer, trimmer and toned.
*This varies from person to person depending on variables such as fitness level, participant's familiarity of routine, intensity level, etc.
- Each class is on a first come first serve basis, so please be on time or even a few minutes early to sign in and get a good space.
- Inform the instructor before class of any physical limitations or health concerns.
- Turn off cell phones and pages.
- No scents is good sense for the comfort of other class participants.
